The domovina: the “house of the dead”

Domovina (Ukrainian domovyna, Belarusian damavina), formed on dom, «house»: the word calls «house» that which receives the dead. In Ukrainian it means both the grave and the coffin, and Hrinčenko’s dictionary already gave «coffin» as its first sense. In Belarusian it is the plank box in which the dead are laid. In popular Russian Dal’ records it as a synonym of grob, «coffin», and in the dialects of Pskov, Novgorod, Vologda and Kostroma as a coffin hollowed from a single trunk
